Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

Sustainability

At ISSABC we recognize the existence and impact of systemic racism, socioeconomic disparities, and educational inequities that have disproportionately affected the most vulnerable communities. We know these must be dismantled if we want our educational institutions to represent just, equitable, diverse, and inclusive (JEDI) learning systems where all members are valued, heard, respected, and empowered to pursue their full potential. We seek to address these historic inequities in how we work with each other and those we serve.

How is ISSABC 2023 supporting J.E.D.I.?

Justice. Dismantling barriers to resources and opportunities in society so that all individuals and communities can live full and dignified life.

—as defined by the J.E.D.I Collaborative

  • Offering a virtual format to attendees around the globe to offer opportunities.
  • Considering visual and hearing disabilities in our content.

Equity. Allocating resources to ensure everyone has access to the same opportunities. Equity recognizes that advantages and barriers—the “isms”—exist.

—as defined by the J.E.D.I Collaborative

  • Keeping registration fees at a running minimum.
  • Supporting students with fee waivers and travel grants

Diversity. All the differences between us are based on which we experience advantages or encounter barriers to opportunities. Diversity isn’t just about racial differences.

—as defined by the J.E.D.I Collaborative

  • Making our content accessible in both English and Spanish and offering presentations in the Spanish language.
  • Offering transcripts of presentations so that they can be easily translated to any languge.
  • Providing automatic translation of our website content.

Inclusion. Fostering a sense of belonging by centering, valuing, and amplifying the voices, perspectives, and styles of those who encounter more barriers based on their identities and lived experiences.

—as defined by the J.E.D.I Collaborative

  • We are running roundtable discussions that will allow voices from all backgrounds to be heard and discuss barriers encountered during their academic career.

Sustainability

In addition to JEDI values, at ISSABC we believe we need to do our part to make the symposium as sustainable and effective as possible. These are some of the initiatives in place to do so:

All food catered at the event will be vegetarian and or vegan.

No one-use plastics will be used at the event.

Travel by committee members will be done considering sustainability measures.

Students being supported by grants will also be encouraged to do so.

We will not offer paper programmes at the event and we will encourage attendees to use digital versions to avoid using paper.

If you have any ideas on how to make the symposium more just, equitable, diverse, inclusive or sustainable we would be more than happy to listen. You can contact us our email or through social media.
